what i love this week....
this week, i love shrines! the one above can be found at Milliande.com along with tutorials. it's a common theme amongst modern altered artists, and i have taught it as a lesson to some of my students before. but i never get tired of it. there's something nice about taking the mundane and turning it into something special just by giving it a home.so i started with an old box i got at a consignment shop, which happened
inspired by Lindsey Heath's hollow books, i added text to the back first. then i punch a hole through the front, almost literally, i didn't exactly have the right tools for the job, so it was a lot of cutting and punching.
i also stamped a small birdcage in the corner and added a gear and some wire mesh.
for the rest of the outside, i
the piece is finished with some copper watch wire wrapped around the outside to give it more of a caged feeling and the egg has feathers and moss stuffed into it.
overall i am very happy with this piece, and i don't feel that the pictures do it justice. there's a wonderful "secret garden" feeling you get when you look through the outside window into the nook where the egg lies.

what i love this week....
so i know its not tuesday, but i am a bit over due for this...so what i love this week is...Carnivale Art!
my inspiration comes from Lisa Kettel's Altered Art Circus, pictured above, that i received as a
gift from one of my friends. i mostly loved how she altered her animals, using bright colors and glitter.
so, inspired by this, i started on my own circus themed assemblage. i made my own box from cardboard, with a simple layout, no small boxes on the inside. the idea of this one was to be a traveling advertisment, like the ones from old carnivales that displayed sideshows etc. so i had only 1 compartment.
then i added the background, a diamond pattern from one of my old sketchbooks, that was once going to be an alice in wonderland page, but never happened.
then i needed a subject, so i found this sad little girl picture in one of my art books.
honesty, i was never a fan of this while i worked on it. but now, looking back through the pictures of it as i post this, i do have a much better fondness for it. i think i do like it. :)

next i added the tickets, and my color scheme was born. black, white and red. to go with this, i added the wiggly ribbon border, then the button and feather and small stars.
to bring out the girl, i gave her a border of pearls.
small objects, like a drum, die, blocks and small bowling pin were added a the bottom.
i finished it with some thread to act as bars and the caps from some fancy grape juice to be the wheels.

and side note, today i got to over 1000 page views! yay!!!! ^_^

what i love this week....
i think this is my most "professional" looking journal cover. the girl is a collaged piece onto a painted diamond background. then i used a gold crayon for some swirls, and that's it!
i love how puffy these books get when they are filled with writings, souvenirs, and all sorts of collage elements. i also love the decorated spines.
altered journals are one of my favorite projects and is definitely a project i want to incorporate into my classroom. it's a project that can easily be very beautiful and personal. for some of the most amazing journals i have seen, because of subject matter, craftsmanship and originality, you should visit Luthien's Pimp & Paint.

what i love this week....
my piece was made with bundled newspaper as the base. i added some plastic sprockets and a metal "L". then i used glue and gold glitter for some swirls and dots (feeling very glittery at the moment). then i used some gold jewelry wire and the copper wire from inside the clocks
this is a very different piece for me, i've never worked with paper before. but of course, it still has my style and is obviously a beth-like piece.

what i love this week....
for this bottle, i used white masking tape and covered the whole surface. then i used a gold and brown mixture all over and a sharpie for the black swirls.
i plan to use this bottle as an element in a larger work sometime.
another previous bottle work i had done was a mother's day present. this one was inspired by the piece to the left at Rubber Road Adventures.
for mine, i used gold, masking tape and swirlies again. then i made some flower stems from rebar wire and mounted pictures of my siblings and i on

bird/nest themed art. the one above can be found at Studio B along with a plethora of other bird related art.i had started on this piece before i saw the three muses theme this week: odd birds. so i may go back and make something for that too, since i am feeling birdy as well.
the whole piece is made from a jar lid, spray painted gold. then i used some robin's egg blue and gold wallpaper on the inside with a silhouette of a bird on top. then i added some blue
then i added the feather and beads to the bottom, which gave it kind of a dream catcher feel. so i went with that and added the blue thread with beads to the surface and some buttons on the inside to play on the domestic theme.
***UPDATE***
i had wanted to add a small egg to this, but all of mine where too big. then i got lucky and found a real egg that was the perfect size and color! unfortunately, i found it an hour away from my house while visiting family, and it did not survive the ride home. but i used the pieces any way and this is how it looks now!
i kind of like it broken, it goes with my "freedom and breaking out" theme. so i'm happy with it, and i am currently working on another dream catcher-esque piece, steampunk themed. :)

egg art! the first time i saw this was in Altered Curiosities while i was flipping through it at a bookstore. didn't buy it, wish i had. this project is inspired by Carla Trujillo's egg shrine, pictured above.i started with a paper
i loved the effect of wrapping the copper wire i used in my altered clock piece, so i used it again in this piece, but with much more
last, i used the same wire to bind it all together, which is my favorite part of the piece. in the picture, it is mounted on a small bottle to hold it up.
i'm not sure what i'll do with this; find a way to mount it as is, or work it into another bigger piece. i really see this as a work in progress still. i want to incorporate this into my time/death

a little love
i don't do many love pieces, but i kind of felt like it today, so
here is a love piece!
it is on a small 5"x7" canvas that i got in a three pack from dollar tree (love!). i started with a cardboard heart that i glued to the center of the canvas. then i glued sheet music over the top and burnished it to fit over the heart. then i used red, green and black oil pastels to add color to the whole piece.
next i got a little
creative. i wanted to use some Tim Holtz sprockets, but i only have 2 left and zero money. growing up poor has forced me to find ways around no materials and no money. what i did have was a spare sheet of rubber stamp material. so i traced my last sprockets, cut them out and
stuck them to paper clips for some makeshift stamps. i really like them! ha.
so i used these stamps and some swirly stamps to build up some nice layers around the edge and alpha
bet stamps on the top and bottom. then i used silver crayon on the green and gold on the red for some more swirls.
finally, i added the key and screw. i just used a regular screwdriver and stuck it through the canvas and everything. and the last thing i added was the text, "love", cut from a magazine.

what i love this week....

dominoes! the ones above can be found at Calamity Kim: Altered Art. i started using this medium about 3 y
i also love seeing them used for jewelry, though i haven't been able to do that myself, i don't have anything to use to make holes in them. :(
however, i have used them to make magnets and i am very pleased with the results. this pink and green one was my first attempt. i love the colors and was very surprised at how well the scrapbook flower and button went together. i added a magnet strip to the back and a small piece of ribbon with a bead to the bottom.

what i love this week....
initially i was going to post one of these every tuesday, but i had spare internet time while working on the latest project so i got this one done early!

so what i love this week is....tea cups! the ones above were found at Oh Joy! sometimes i like to feel fancy and sweet, and now is one of those times. so were the time when i created these pieces.
this first one is a simple ATC (which i really need to get working on some more!) i used scrapbook paper pasted onto card stock to add depth and cut them into tea cup and tea pot shapes. i love using scrapbook paper for silhouettes, it just seems so fulfilling to the composition.
this one
this last one is an encaustics piece i did in my summer workshop. again, scrapbook papers were used for the silhouettes and collaged into the wax

what i love this week....
to keep myself going with this, i've decided that i need some kind of prompt. i decided to use many. one of which is "what i love t
his week", which will include inspiration blogs, projects and how i incorporate those idea into what i do. so what i love this week is COLLECTIONS. i found an amazing blog, Aesthetic Ouburst. she finds all these nice things so i don't have to! i have no idea how long she's been blogging, i've been looking through her site for almost 2 hours now and am still nowhere near the end of her pages. i collect a few things, and this week i am sharing my jars and bottles. this isn't nearly all of them, but these are the ones that fit on this neat little shelf i salvaged and paint
ed and they hold my craft supplies: feathers, beads, gears, chipboard, etc. i also keep a few little empty bottles on there, just for display and contrast. this is one of my favorite elements in my office, and i will be posting more pictures of the rest of the place soon. i also collect snails, just because love them. but they are no where near organized, so you don't get to see them. :)

another wonderful thing that i WISH i could collect more is vintage mushroom things. i have a few already, all from thrift stores; coffee cup, clock, and napkin holder that i use for a note holder on my desk. i also found some amazing mushroom canisters, but i wasn't allowed to buy them because we had just gotten new stainless steel canisters. :(
